Suga of BTS Sparks Heated Debate After First Instagram Post in Two Years

Suga, member of the global K-pop group BTS, has sparked wide controversy in South Korea after returning to social media for the first time in two years. His comeback on Instagram has sharply divided public opinion, with some criticizing him while others expressed support.

Background of the Case

Last year, Suga was embroiled in a major scandal after being charged with riding an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. At the time, his blood alcohol level was measured at 0.227%, which is three times the legal limit for license revocation. He was fined 15 million won by the court.

Facing harsh public backlash, Suga issued a handwritten apology in which he wrote:

> “My negligence has caused pain to everyone who supports me. I will do my best not to make such mistakes again, and I will live with regret and reflection.”

After completing his alternative service as a public service worker on June 21, he reiterated his apology, stating:

> “I apologize for the disappointment and concern caused by what happened last year. Above all, I deeply regret hurting the feelings of the fans. I also feel sorry toward the members, whose hearts must have been burdened because of me.”

Donations and Volunteer Activities

In June, Korean media reported that Suga donated 5 billion won to establish a specialized treatment center at Severance Hospital to support individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

Beyond financial support, it was revealed that Suga dedicated his weekends from March to June volunteering, meeting children with autism, and participating in the development of therapy and social programs.

First Instagram Update After Two Years

On September 22, Suga uploaded several new photos to his personal Instagram account, where he appeared dressed entirely in black while playing the guitar. This marked his first update since August 25, 2023, and quickly stirred strong reactions among Korean netizens.

Public Debate Among Netizens

His reappearance after such a long silence led to divided opinions:

Critics accused him of attempting to “polish his image” and cover up his past incident with large-scale donations and charitable activities.

Supporters, on the other hand, argued that the incident was relatively minor compared to more serious offenses, and emphasized that his donations and volunteer work are clear signs of genuine remorse and a sincere effort to make amends.

Between Criticism and Support

Suga’s long-awaited return highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding his public image. While some believe that money cannot erase past mistakes, others see his recent actions as evidence of

maturity, responsibility, and true regret.
